Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are down to the wire in their battle to finish as year-end No. 1 in the ATP Rankings. The scenarios for who will finish in top spot narrowed significantly Wednesday when Nadal produced a stunning comeback from 0-4 in the third set to defeat Daniil Medvedev in round-robin play.
Djokovic has a must-win match on Thursday against Roger Federer. If he loses to the Swiss, Nadal will automatically clinch the year-end No. 1 spot for a fifth time. Djokovic must go on to win the title to have a chance of finishing on top.
Year-End No. 1 Scenarios- Nadal finishes No. 1 if he reaches the final or Djokovic does not win the title
- Djokovic finishes No. 1 if he wins the title AND Nadal does not reach the final
On Thursday Djokovic squares off with Federer in Thursday's evening session. The winner will advance to the semi-finals. The loser will be eliminated.
Nadal is looking to claim year-end No. 1 for a fifth time to tie Djokovic, Federer and Jimmy Connors. Djokovic is looking to equal Pete Sampras' mark of six year-end No. 1 finishes.
